When I heard about a search engine created by former google employees I had some expectations. They might topple Google from that position or atleast give them a challenge. But my simple tests on the search site was extremely disappointing. Maybe they will improve over time.
First, I tried searching for Cuil. Was I surprised ? Cuil.com was no where in the search results. Of course, no one would want to search cuil.com from cuil.com.
So now I went ahead and searched for the term "cuil search". I didn't expect their site to be on top of the results, but atleast they should be in the first page. But I was disappointed again.
Now I went for "cuil search engine" and there was only a single result from a the site searchengine.com. No other results.
Lastly I searched for cuil.com. Still no link from cuil.com. The whois site with the domain information came first.
You can find all the screen shots for these results at Screenshots.

I did not miss their "About cuil" link on their main page. I just wanted them to point it out to me.
When they cannot find themself, how can I expect them to find something else. Still I tried to find "Mridul Narayanan" from among the crowd. My site was nowhere to be seen. Even though the safe search on button was green, the search results had sex results written all over..
At the end, I could find only one good thing about them. Their looks are pleasing. And they did a good job in organizing the results in a grid mode which is convenient to browse. Maybe cuil can provide an alternative to adsense and get more web developers into their pack.
But for the timebeing, I'll stick to google. For me, its the results that matter, and not the looks.
